Kintsugi & Urushi

Kintsugi – Imperfection Meets Gold

The Kintsugi & Urushi Studio specializes in the traditional Japanese art of visibly repairing broken objects. Broken ceramic vessels are restored using urushi (lacquer) and gold or silver powder. Cracks and fractures are not concealed but deliberately highlighted, becoming an integral part of the object’s aesthetic.

Felicitas Sohm spent several years in Japan mastering this technique. Today, she teaches in her studio and restores ceramics for clients. Each piece is carefully repaired by hand using traditional methods. The resulting lines of gold or silver tell the story of the object and give it a new sense of uniqueness.

Kintsugi combines craftsmanship, aesthetics, and sustainability: instead of replacing objects, they are repaired and continued to be used. Kintsugi is part of the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi and means seeing beauty in imperfection.

At Kaiserhaus OF GOODS, Felicitas Sohm sells restored ceramics, accepts restoration commissions, and offers workshops.
